The mintage of 500,000 coins for the 1883 Hawaiian silver dollar is misleading. Many of those pieces struck at the San Francisco Mint were eventually melted, and coins this well-preserved are scarce and in high demand by collectors of Hawaiiana. Dappled olive-gold and gunmetal-blue toning covers each side with splashes of brilliance interspersed. Ticks are faintly visible beneath the original overlay, mostly on King Kalakaua's upper cheek.
