What are Colonial Coins?

In the past, coins were used as symbols of a sovereign nation. U.S. Mint first issued pattern coins in 1792, copper coins in 1793, silver coins in 1794, and gold coins in 1795. Before America decided to issue its own coin, people used coins, tokens, and medals issued by private mints and individuals from inside and outside America. These coins are still in circulation today, and they are called colonial coins.

Colonial coins were minted in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont. Colonial coins originated from outside America includes those from the Netherlands, Spain, and Britain. Many of these coins are already in the collections, but some of them are still up for sale or auction.
