When it comes to buying rare coins, you need to be extra careful. Some dealers will offer good deals while some might charge you way too much for a coin with a low value. Here are tips to avoid getting ripped off:

• Have a price guide so you have an idea of the value of the coins you want to buy. You also need to have basic knowledge about coin grades as well.
• Don't be afraid to shop around. There are many coin dealers out there. After you've visited 2 or 3 shops and looked at some of the same types of coins, then you'll start to get a feel for what you should be paying for the coins you want.
• Prepare a list of coins you are considering even before you enter a coin dealer's shop. If you're putting together a few different sets, then chances are you're not going to remember off the top of your head exactly what dates and what mints you need.
